Wetland Restoration
Restoration is not as simple as some would like to
think. At Delta Seven the first question we ask is, "restoration
to what?" Not just any
wetland will be appropriate so a little investigation is
warranted. This small effort makes success nearly guaranteed.

The
first step in the Hammock Park rehydration project was to map the soils
(left). Knowing what the soils were like before the swamp was dehydrated
allowed us to develop plans to put the right amount of water back.
In this case, the mapping showed that the original swamp was two bowls
with different hydroperiods and not the single bowl that managers had
suspected. This simple discovery led to a hydration plan that
restored both wetland types.

Restoration
of this bay-maple wetland required the removal of a layer of material
that had altered the elevation of the floor of the swamp.
Carefully supervised by a field ecologist, the material was removed
without damage to roots and knees.
Within weeks the previously buried seed bank repopulated the floor with
herbs and ferns. No planting was needed.
